5 tips for creating an awesome hospitality team from a group of individuals Posted by Smart Rota on 27th August 2016

Managing a team in the hospitality industry can be something of a strain. This is often down to the fact that it draws some rather charismatic characters. These people often prove crucial to the growth of your business by playing a key part in the “personal” aspect of your service, however strong individualities can make team building difficult…

For hospitality managers, creating an awesome team from a group of individuals can take some time, but when carefully invested it can pay dividends in the future. While it might seem a daunting prospect to begin with, by following a few simple tips you can be on your way to a strong team and a flourishing business as a result.

Team building itself doesn’t always have to come in the shape of activity-fueled weekends away (although for the right people they can certainly help). Small changes to your day-to-day management can have just as big an impact.

Your workplace is a classroom - make everyday a lesson for everyone

Many of us will have heard the term make your workplace into a classroom. This doesn’t mean talking down to your employees - it can be far more rewarding to display that you too are constantly learning and evolving. It’s no secret that many people in your team will have dreams and aspirations outside the hospitality sector. By providing regular learning opportunities such as one-on-one mentoring and team workshops, and encouraging more experienced team members to share this with newer members, you can help to foster a spirit of evolution that naturally brings people together.

Continually monitor the positive (and negative) effects that each individual has on your team

No team is ever going to totally gel immediately, especially in the hospitality industry where strong individuals are rife. By looking at the impact that the small things that each individual has on those around them, such as encouragement or above-and-beyond assistance, you can highlight these points and begin to foster them. As they understand what they do that has the best impact on their team will start to understand better the role they play. On the opposite end of the spectrum, any negative aspects should be addressed to stop them from negatively impacting on those around them.

Career growth - the ultimate incentive

Studies have shown that one of the biggest incentives for an employee to really engage in an organisation is opportunities for growth. Be sure that you are using this to your advantage by looking inwards for progression. Use your coaching and learning sessions to clearly define the potential for progression in their role, with a focus on the impact on the team as a whole.

Ensure a clearly defined management support system

Individuals perform better and understand the role they play when they feel adequately supported. Supervisors and managers need to ensure that they have a clearly defined support system in place to deal with any issues or needs.

Recognise and celebrate team successes

At the bare minimum, hospitality managers should be sure to outline any team successes and thank absolutely everyone involved, but it can really pay to go one step further. Outstanding team performance deserves a celebration where each individual can feel recognised for the role they’ve played. This can really help bind a team together.
